Today’s cute

January 26, 2011

I found this the other day via – I posted a related video in May/2009, but this one is even funnier. Why, you ask? Because this one has monkeys! It even has a dentist monkey. You’re welcome.

More fun at the zoo

June 8, 2010

How could it be a trip to the zoo without penguins?

And this jaguar resorted to some herbal medicine, just like any domestic cat…

But by far the best part was observing the gorillas…

Ya casi…

mi ex-gordito esta por llegar de Colombia – el avion ya va pasando Nebraska! 😀

Cute video of squirrel monkeys enjoying an enrichment activity involving Jell-o containing blueberries.

Surely, it must be significant that the monkeys demonstrate no interest whatsoever in the Jell-o, going straight for the “good stuff” and tossing the gelatinous bits aside without a second glance…This makes me consider – again – the true nutritional value of some of the things we put in our body…Sugar-free Jell-o is a “free” WW food, at zero points…Maybe a nice piece of fruit would actually be a smarter option?

These words from a short story by Amy Hempel stopped me in my tracks today. I had to look up all squinty at the trees and pinch the bridge of my nose hard to scare back the sharp lump I suddenly felt in my throat.

“I think of the chimp, the one with the talking hands.

In the course of the experiment, that chimp had a baby. Imagine how her trainers must have thrilled when the mother, without prompting, began to sign to her newborn.

Baby, drink milk.

Baby, play ball.

And when the baby died, the mother stood over the body, her wrinkled hands moving with animal grace, forming again and again the words: Baby, come hug, Baby come hug, fluent now in the language of grief.”

I saw the excerpt today on another blog, and can’t wait to read more.

This article was remarkable, and somewhat heartbreaking, too:

Grieving Chimps

“When Dorothy, a beloved female chimp died at the Sanaga-Yong Chimpanzee Rescue Center in Cameroon, her burial was witnessed by the rest of the chimps residing there.

Monica Szczupider took this photo that showed a wall of grieving chimps paying their last respect:

Speaking about Dorothy, Miss Szczupider, 30, said the chimp was a ‘prominent figure’ within a group of about 25 chimps.

‘Chimps are not silent. They are gregarious, loud, vocal creatures, usually with relatively short attention spans,’ she said.

‘But they could not take their eyes off Dorothy, and their silence, more than anything, spoke volumes.'”
