I found an old journal from my college days, and was bemused to see what an insufferable mess I was back then…This is an excerpt from a journal exercise I did for a social justice class:

peace smells like cinnamon apples like a lover’s skin in the winter like my grandmother’s potpourri burner like wella balsam shampoo and johnson & johnson’s no more tangles. smells like sweaty in a rocker after hauling mortar like wet pine needles in pisgah national forest smells like the morning after a thunderstorm like peaches or like my mom
love very similar smells like the she-cactapookus hole in the bathroom like my grandmother’s lancome lipstick love smells like the funnel cakes at the state fair
